The sky above the plains was tinted faintly with orange, sky darkening with the promise of nighttime in the next few hours or so, but such threats didn't deter Eirikur. The child remained nestled in the tall grass, feeling the cool evening breeze ruffle his shimmering coat. He knew he shouldn't be out so late, but it got so stifling staying in the nursery when he knew his brothers were out here somewhere. And nights like this where it was warm enough to sleep in the open, he really didn't like staying indoors. Call it restlessness, but he had been raised a traveler, and his paws itched to move sometimes. He couldn't just stay one place all the time.
He could smell pokemon scent on the breeze upwind of him, but they seemed far off and not an immediate threat to him, so he simply ignored it. He could even scent the river that fed into the mess of swampland from his makeshift nest, so being able to scent pokemon was a given. Closing his eyes, the child nestled down in the grass, his bushy tail tucked near to him. He wasn't falling asleep, as he was still very much listening to his surroundings for any sign of predators, but he was relaxing. There was still some daylight before he had to return to the clan and Eirikur intended to use his time to the fullest.
After a few moments of resting his eyes and paws, Eirikur stretched and continued his day's search, though it was more of a stroll seeing as he had no hints or leads. Who knew, he may even meet someone out here.

By the time the young child was satisfied with his search, the sun was fully setting, the sky turned amber, and the edge of the sky was purpling to the dark blue shade of night time. Eiríkur hadn't seen hide or hair of his siblings, not that he had completely expected to. At this point he felt it was more wishful thinking that he would run into them this way. One day Aleks would come back for him, he knew, but now was not that time. A cold breeze blew across the open field and ruffled the child's pelt, but more notably to Eiríkur, he could make out the scent of a nearby pokemon. Very nearby.
A hissing sound emanated from the direction of the scent, leaving Eiríkur very little time to dodge the poisonous barb that was hurled in his direction. A few tail lengths away was a sandy patch of soil- a Sandshrew’s den if the very irate ground type was anything to go by. “Hey, I mean no harm..” he said gently, backing off a few steps and tucking his tail between his legs. His brother had told him that children were often given more slack, but he got the distinct feeling that she wasn’t listening to him, unwittingly or not, he had invaded her territory. That feeling was cemented when she responded with a shout of “Liar!” and swiped at him, landing a solid hit to his cheek.
This was far from the first time he’s had to protect himself from hostile pokemon that wouldn’t listen to him, but he certainly wasn’t about to fight where they ran the risk of caving the sandshrew’s burrow. He wouldn’t hold this against her. Backtracking a few paces, Eiríkur spun around and landed a tackle, holding the sandshrew down, though due to his diminutive figure, he was easily shoved off.
Setting his jaw defiantly, Eiríkur tumbled, rolling back onto his paws to recover from the shove, then retaliated with a sand attack, managing to get the dry, sandy soil into the female’s eyes. It bought the child time to reorient himself and rush at her once more. Unlike last time, Sandshrew attempted to dodge the attack, expecting it now. Eiríkur still landed the hit, but it was only a glancing blow, leaving him skidding and digging his hind legs in the dirt to slow down.

Digging his tiny, but needle sharp claws into the dirt, Eirikur wheeled around to turn back towards the sandshrew, barreling at full speed, claws extended to grip at the ground type’s hard hide. Tussling on the ground for a few moments left the female with scratches and Eirikur with a berry clenched in his jaws. He hadn’t tried to take it, but when she tried to bash him in the face with it to get him off, he had decided she was better off without a hard berry to use as a weapon. Putting the berry down for safe keeping, he looked back at the shrew pokemon and huffed. She was blinking through the sand in her eyes as she ran at him, claws poised to strike.
At that moment there was movement from the direction of the burrow, “Lynnet? What’s going on?” A head poked out of the burrow, that of a Cyndaquil, male by the sound and scent, and he realized then what had happened. He had strayed too close to the burrow where she was likely guarding an egg. “Fion, get back in the burrow!” The sandshrew snapped, missing her swipe in part to the distraction.
Eirikur bit his lip as he considered the situation unfolding before him. At this rate he’d be overpowered in no time, particularly since the Cyndaquil was currently igniting the fire on his back to assist his mate. Using Wish to prepare, he watched the mates squabble, the Sandshrew begrudgingly being convinced to use rest instead of straining herself further while Fionan took over defending their home. In a final attempt at conveying his good intentions, he didn’t attack while they did so, but it seemed they didn’t even notice his polite gesture. How rude.
With Lynnet asleep now, Fion took point, hurling himself at Eiri, who let loose a growl at the imminent impact, the two rolling in the dry dirt in the aftermath of the attack with Eirikur on his back on the ground. Using his back paws, he managed to kick the fire type off of him and rolled back onto his paws with a little tail whip for good measure. The Cyndaquil prepared another tackle, and while Eirikur disliked this situation, he figured if there was no getting around it, he would have to fight back. And so the two met in the middle, a tackle versus a Covet, which sent both combatants flying back, Eirikur standing his ground and skidding whereas the Cyndaquil rolled, dazed momentarily by the blow to the head.
Eirikur used this time to land a follow up hit on Fionan, which promptly knocked him out. Giving a mildly annoyed huff, the child nudged Fion nearer to the burrow entrance, taking advantage of Lynnet’s nap to ensure her mate would not be caught in the crossfire. The pains he took to be nice...

Lynnet quickly awakened after that, further enraged by the sight of her fainted mate by the burrow. Eirikur, who had been trying to sneak away before she awoke was suddenly pricked by a poison sting, the barb digging into his pelt, though as soon as he felt it, he used his teeth to pull it out, spitting it out so that nothing got in his mouth. It seemed like they wouldn’t be getting out of this the easy way.
Letting out a growl, Eiri lunged at the Sandshrew, clinging with his claws and causing as much damage as possible before being shaken off. He just wanted this to be over already. Sending up another wish, Eirikur winced as the ground type’s claws dug into his fluffy coat. It would have hurt much worse had she not already been weakened. It wouldn’t take much more now. He could tell this long conflict was wearing on her, but she literally brought it on herself.
When Lynnet drew back for another swipe, Eirikur beat her to the punch, tackling her square in the chest and knocking her down. As she struggled to bring herself to her paws, Eirikur used tail whip and prepared to end the fight. She landed one more scratch before his last Covet knocked her out.
Giving a sigh, Eirikur nudged her back to the burrow as well, annoyance clear in his stance. Shaking out his pelt, sending shimmers into the dark, Eirikur continued on. The sun had set fully during the battle, and he had no doubt that Maria would be concerned as to where he was, and what happened to make him so late in returning. Rustling in the brush caused Eirikur's ears to twitch, listening for further threats as he continued across the plains. It was after a moment or two that he realized there was a pokemon following downwind of him, trying to fake him out by matching his pace. Growling in warning, Eirikur called out "I know you're there! Show yourself!"
Out from the brush came a Stufful, one that looked fairly young, perhaps a few years older than himself, and covered in a surprising amount of scars considering that. "Jeeze, calm down, I'm just looking for a playmate." Eirikur's ears pinned back in confusion and a small amount of distrust. No one ever really approached him in a friendly way these days outside the clan, and while it was a pleasant surprise, he still had to be a tad bit skeptical. Who would be out looking to play this late? Stretching, the Stufful smiled, "So you wanna play fight or not?" Eirikur didn't see why not, as he was already late getting home, and there was still a long walk ahead of him. this shouldn't be as bad as the fight with the couple from earlier.
"Alright fine... But I have to get back to where I'm staying afterwards. It's getting late. And you should at least introduce yourself first, don't you think?" He didn't like the thought of possibly making a friend and only knowing them by species. Others could get away with that with him because in his six years of life, he hadn't seen another eevee with his coloring anywhere, but apart from the scars, this Stufful wasn't very notable. "Name's Keto. What's yours?" The Stufful bounded up beside him and batted at his shiny mane, making Eirikur huff. "My name is Eirikur. Now what exactly did you have in mind for this play battle?"
